It's safe to say that blogging has changed my life. What started out as a hobby almost 10 years ago has now turned into entrepreneurship. Although I have stopped running my lifestyle blog, the benefits and lessons I've learned from the last four years have honestly launched my career in both entrepreneurship and social media marketing.
Even if you don't like writing like I do, there are still benefits to having a blog, even if you are not a writer.
Why Starting a Blog is Good For You
- It is a working portfolio. Blogs are useful regardless of niche (I'll expand more on that later), but they are almost essential if you work in a creative or visual industry. This allows all of your work to be in one place so that people can see what you have done and are capable of doing.
- You develop yourself as an expert or at least very knowledgeable in your field. Whether you are a writer, an interior designer, or even a financial analyst, having a blog establishes your expertise. Even if you work at a job that you are completely happy with, having a blog can help you land freelance work or even a promotion. Because most blogs don't have a consistent amount of income coming in, it also shows your passion for your field because you are taking the time to create content and information about your niche/industry for free. It proves that you love it and are so dedicated that you will publish free information and work for it.
- It helps you practice your writing skills because that's a great skill to master no matter what you want to do. Even if you want to work with numbers or even in a very physical and in-person job like being a mechanic or working as a surgeon, you still need to write emails, send invoices, and sometimes even post onto social media. You want to make sure that your writing skills--grammar, spelling, and syntax--are to the best of their abilities because misspelling and bad grammar can damage your reputation and credibility.
- It allows you to be creative however you want. So this may not be necessarily helpful to your industry, but we all need ways to relax and express ourselves. For some people, having a blog about anything lets you express yourself however you want, especially if you work in a job that isn't very creative in nature or is very rigid in terms of content creation. Sometimes you might just even be going through things in life and writing it out on a blog (private or public) can help you release some negative energy.
Although I don't blog as often as I used to anymore, I still love to write, and I highly recommend starting a blog no matter your industry or writing skills. It will enrich your life and career. I honestly believe it.
